The Canon i-Sensys LBP6300dn is a mono-laser printer that offers good value in an office environment.

Even while colour laser printers gather in ever-larger numbers, mono lasers show no signs of going away. And for high-volume good-quality text (in particular), a printer like the Canon i-Sensys LBP6300dn seems to offer most of the features that matter in an office environment.

The Canon i-Sensys LBP6300dn follows the standard blueprint for Canon laser printers. A chunky 250-sheet draw is situated at the bottom of the printer, and the pages drop safely into the 150-sheet tray at the top. We had no problems with paper feeding, and the design looks clean and professional. It’s also open to upgrades, and besides the 250-sheet input and the 50-sheet multi-purpose trays, an optional 500-sheet cassette can be added for heavier usage.

The Canon i-Sensys LBP6300dn is network ready, and its 100Mb/s ethernet interface will allow it to slot seamlessly into many an office network, while the Remote User Interface gives fine control over the Canon from a distance. No wireless facilities are provided.

The Canon i-Sensys LBP6300dn’s standard print resolution of 2400x600dpi is a cut above the level of detail usually available below the £250 mark. Text is crisp and beautifully defined, and while we might quibble about the slightly faint output available as standard (you can of course tinker with the settings), we suspect most offices will be happy with the print quality.

The pace, though, isn’t perhaps as impressive as we might expect. 19.1 pages per minute (ppm) was typical in our real-world testing using 10-page documents. This puts it only slightly ahead of the Samsung SCX-4600 (reviewed here), a printer that costs half the price.

Where the Canon i-Sensys LBP6300dn does score well, though, is in its duplex facilities. It can print to both sides of the paper at the rate of 15.1ppm. Reaching almost 80 percent of the standard print speed, this makes it a superior printer for duplex.

Graphics are well handled and, indeed, the Canon i-Sensys LBP6300dn generates them at the very capable of rate of 16.5ppm. The results are crisp and dripping with details. Graphics are often hard to reproduce on a mono printer, but even photos look quite respectable on the LBP6300dn.

OUR VERDICT

The Canon i-Sensys LBP6300dn's basic speed isn’t outstanding, but it is one of the most capable duplex printers we’ve seen yet. If double-sided printing is important to you (and if you’re a business looking to cut costs, it really ought to be) then the Canon is a strong option. Add to that value running costs, good networking and potentially very strong paper handling, and this is a very decent printer.
