Also known as the Wireless AC 1750 Dual Band Cloud Router, the DIR-865L is D-Link's flagship 802.11ac model. You do get a lot of router for your money, and this is one of the cheaper 11ac options. See also: Group test: what's the best wireless router?

It doesn't have the designer look of some of D-Link's other routers, such as the DIR-657 and the DIR-857, perhaps because it wants to be taken seriously. The built-in stand means you can't mount it any other way than upright, and it has internal antennae. See also: Group test: what's the best modem router?

The front of the router has a WPS button and two LEDs that indicate whether it is still connected to the internet. If so, it's blue. If not, it's orange. On the back you'll find four gigabit Ethernet ports, one USB 2.0 port and the on/off switch.

D-Link DIR-865LThe interface is largely the same as in previous models, and isn't as user-friendly as Asus' or Cisco's. We've no complaints about the features on offer, but configuring a guest network takes too many clicks, for example.

D-Link has gone cloud crazy, though. You can access the DIR-865L in the cloud and configure certain things, including the guest network. You do this online via Mydlink or via apps for both Android and iOS. Here you can also operate IP cameras and view the footage. Not much is possible for changing the router settings, yet.

The scores of the D-Link DIR-865L paint the same picture in the 3m and 10m tests: it certainly isn't the fastest out there. When connected to three laptops, the D-Link's performance was unremarkable.

However, if all you're concerned about is 802.11ac performance, the speeds are exceptionally high. Even at 10m the DIR-865L managed just under 490Mbps, which is outstanding. It's curious that, just like with the Asus RT-AC66U, these scores are achieved with a Netgear R6300 in bridge mode. When we instead used a second DIR-865L as bridge, speeds did not exceed 400 Mbps.
