The AVM Fritz!box Fon Wireless Lan 7390 is far more than just a wireless router. While it does an excellent job of managing a home network, with support for 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz 802.11n wireless networks, it works as a base station for DECT cordless phones and provides an impressive list of functions for managing calls.

In addition to the usual array of four gigabit Ethernet ports at the back and a connector for an ADSL2+ line, it also has three connectors for telephones. It has a built-in answering machine, can log calls and block unwanted numbers and route calls to other numbers. The AVM Fritz!box Fon Wireless Lan 7390 supports internet telephony too, and allows you to choose whether to use a fixed connection or SIP account when dialling specific numbers.

If this sounds like a lot of configuring to do, the AVM Fritz!box Fon Wireless Lan 7390's well-designed on-board interface and wizards really help with the set-up process. Setting up a VOIP account, connecting landline phones and getting hooked up to the internet was all straightforward.

In addition to the standard USB-based storage sharing, the AVM Fritz!box Fon Wireless Lan 7390 uniquely comes with 512MB of internal memory to share small files with other computers. It lets you choose whether files are shared online and can set up virtual folders to be accessed via FTP.

There are even more extras in the AVM Fritz!box Fon Wireless Lan 7390 that we've never seen before, such as a night mode for your wireless network, which disables it at certain times to save power.

Anything less than the best wireless transfer speeds would let the AVM Fritz!box Fon Wireless Lan 7390 down, and here it doesn't disappoint either. In our tests, its performance was far ahead of anything else we tested, managing 82 Mbps at short range and an outstanding 34Mbps at long range.

OUR VERDICT

Admittedly, the AVM Fritz!box Fon Wireless Lan 7390 is a very expensive router, and the multitude of extras isn't necessary for basic home networking. However there's little else to fault AVM on in their design of the 7390, as it is clear plenty of thought has gone into every aspect of this router.
