Toshiba makes a vast range of business laptops, and sitting right at the top of this range in terms of performance is the Toshiba Tecra M11–17W. It's also a pretty expensive business laptop, at £1,198 inc VAT.

With the emphasis firmly on business productivity and manageability, the Toshiba Tecra M11–17W eschews inappropriate components such as a gaming graphics and 'Dolby enhanced audio' to give you instead a super-fast 2.66GHz Intel Core i5-560M, a comprehensive set of ports and excellent connectivity including docking station support and a 3G modem.

A pair of USB 2.0 ports is provided, one of which doubles as an eSATA port and both VGA and Mini DisplayPort connectors are available for external monitors.

Although the Toshiba Tecra M11–17W is pretty heavy at 2.5kg, its business-like textured black casing feels durable and not overly heavy. Its 14in LED-backlit screen is just a little larger than the more commonly found 13.3in size, which makes it easy to read, but also contributes to a slightly larger overall size than many rival laptops.

The keyboard is of the standard tessellating variety with a reasonably good amount of travel, making it pleasantly easy to type on. A rather small recessed touchpad is provided, but this is complemented by an additional trackpoint device nestling in the middle of the keyboard. This has its own set of buttons placed just below the spacebar to give you the choice of input methods.

Between the tackpad pushbuttons sits a fingerprint reader for easy single sign-on. There's also a SmartCard Reader, TPM encryption and Computrace asset tracking support in the BIOS to help prevent theft or assist in recovery.

Performance-wise the Toshiba Tecra M11–17W is unsurprisingly speedy, its score of 119 points in WorldBench seeing off the competition at a stroke. Unlike some competing models, it doesn't have a discrete graphics processor, but the integrated graphics of the Core i5 CPU proved themselves to be more than adequate for business use - even achieving a just-about-playable frame rate of 33fps when faced with FEAR.
