If you’re looking for something to travel around with that you’ll use largely for working as well as playing the odd movie then the Toshiba Satellite R80-143 could be right up your street.

Weighing in at low 1.43kg, the Satellite lasted 573 minutes in our battery life tests before conking out – that’s just 27 minutes short of ten hours.

Performance of the Toshiba Satellite R830-143 is adequate in comparison with the other laptops on test – a WorldBench 6 score of 109 may be short of the best in this category, but it comfortably beats an HP Pavilion dv7, an out-and-out desktop replacement model.

Unfotunately, we don’t have an accurate result of gaming capabilities, but based on its use of Intel integrated graphics, we’d estimate a framerate of 15fps in FEAR.

The Toshiba Satellite R830-143 is one four models to use an Intel Core i5-2410M processor in the group test, and comes with 6GB of memory and a large 640GB hard drive loaded with 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium.

The Toshiba Satellite R830-143’s obvious vocation is as a work tool – the screen has a matt finish, meaning you won’t get irritating reflections when you’re trying to work. The colour depth does suffer slightly as a result, but for a laptop that will be comfortable to use no matter where you are, it’s a compromise worth making.

The design of the Toshiba Satellite R830-143 is another talking point – the brushed-metal finish looks very smart and despite the small chassis the keyboard is easy to use for prolonged periods of time, as is the trackpad.

The shell of the Toshiba Satellite R830-143 is made from a magnesium alloy, which explains the low weight. In terms of connectivity you’ll find USB 3.0 and eSATA ports. If you’re a clumsy type then the hard drive protection utility, which temporarily shuts off the hard drive when it senses any vibration, may help keep your precious data safe.

It’s relatively robust, even if the dark magnesium chassis is prone to scratches.

OUR VERDICT

Toshiba’s Satellite R830-143 is the smallest of the laptops on test and if you’re after a highly portable model with excellent battery life, it’s hard to beat. Its diminutive size means that some compromises have been made, and while the screen is good, colours are slightly dull when viewing photographs and videos.
