Having heard a story recently concerning someone managing to run over an entire suitcase while reversing their car, PC Advisor realises it's easy to be careless, clumsy or just plain stupid, even when expensive, precious items are being handled.

This is why Toshiba has been so rigorous with its Satellite Pro A120. Independent durability testing was used to optimise the design, the firm says, which means it ought to take a bit of a beating. It can withstand up to 100ml of hot coffee, apparently.

Looking at the Toshiba, it certainly appears to be sturdy – although happily this doesn't mean it's built like a tank. Weighing in at 3kg, it's not exactly an ultraportable, but you shouldn't have too many problems carrying it about.

The Satellite Pro is aimed at the business market, but it could easily do a job as a portable entertainment centre. The 15.4in widescreen display is good for displaying DVD movie format ratios, while the generous hard drive and multi-format DVD writer mean it could be used as a personal video recorder if teamed with an external TV tuner.

A score of 90 points in our WorldBench 5 testing suite was impressive if not outstanding for a laptop at this price point. However, don't even think about trying to play games on the Satellite Pro – it'll struggle with all but the most basic titles.

There are plenty of connectivity options, such as Wi-Fi and gigabit ethernet, and a host of applications will protect your data and help you recover it if something catastrophic happens.

OUR VERDICT

We'd hesitate to call the Toshiba Satellite Pro A120 bomb-proof, but it's one tough cookie, that's for sure. It's also a very capable model, as long as you don't want to play games. And despite the toughness of the build, the aesthetics don't suffer, meaning it won't look out of place at home or in the office.
