The Sony Vaio VGN-FE41E is a sleek laptop. At 2.8kg, it is both durable and light enough to take on the road. Its dark metallic outer and inner casing makes it one of the most attractive models here, with plenty of space either side of the trackpad and keys. Behind the keyboard a mesh panel conceals the speakers, but we’d have preferred to see a larger trackpad with a scrolling panel.

Two programmable shortcut keys, volume controls and a practical mute button are the only hotkeys the Sony Vaio VGN-FE41E sports. The Sony Vaio VGN-FE41E’s sunken keys make typing difficult, while we found the Enter key and spacebar too small. The keys below the trackpad are too thin.

Supporting all current Wi-Fi standards, the Sony Vaio VGN-FE41E has a somewhat fiddly on/off switch on its front. There’s no Bluetooth, but we were pleased to see three USB ports. There’s also an integrated ‘Motion Eye’ camera and microphone discreetly located above the screen.

And the Sony Vaio VGN-FE41E offers some significant specs: 120GB hard drive, 1GB DDR2 RAM, 1.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T5500 processor and an nVidia GeForce Go graphics card. All this adds up to a good WorldBench performance, and the Sony achieved a healthy 62 points in our benchmark.

However, the Sony Vaio VGN-FE41E fared badly in our games tests and achieved a very disappointing score of just 7fps.

One of the most notable elements of the Sony Vaio VGN-FE41E is the generous selection of software included in the package. As
well as Vista Home Premium, the laptop benefits from the inclusion of Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0, Premiere Elements 3.0 and Norton Internet Security.

OUR VERDICT

Sleek and nice to look at, the Sony Vaio VGN-FE41E lacks features we would expect in a laptop of this price.
