Closest in both specification and price to the HP Pavilion dv6-3130sa, the Samsung RF510-S02UK is a 15.6in laptop that offers many distinctive features which make it a rather different proposition.

The design is minimal with an almost retro feel and a two-tone gunmetal and silver finish. The dark keys of the Samsung RF510-S02UK's keyboard sit in the lighter-coloured part which helps them to pop-out, making them easier to see.

Unlike the HP dv6, the Samsung RF510-S02UK laptop offers a full numeric keypad. Dedicated volume controls and a wireless on/off button are provided next to the large silver power switch, although sadly there are no media transport keys.

While Samsung does provide a software bundle including a CyberLink multimedia suite (and the usual sponsored trial versions of Microsoft Office and Norton Antivirus), it's a hands-off approach here than the likes of Sony or HP, which leaves you in a more traditional Windows environment. So the Samsung RF510-S02UK has no fancy swooshing application docks or other attempts to re-brand your Microsoftian desktop experience.

Based on the 2.53GHz Intel Core i5-460M processor, the Samsung RF510-S02UK is a speedy performer, delivering a chart-topping 112 points from WorldBench 6. It also comes with a capacious 640GB hard drive and a pair of USB 3.0 ports in addition to two standard USB 2.0 connectors. Sadly, if you're a Firewire or eSATA fan you'll be disappointed to find neither on the RF510.

The nVidia GeForce GT 330M has 1GB of memory, and delivers reasonably good graphics performance. The Samsung RF510-S02UK is not quite up there with the Acer and Medion systems, but it has the edge over Toshiba's similarly-equipped Satellite A660-15T – and is considerably faster than the HP Pavilion dv6.

The Samsung RF510-S02UK's display is a glossy 1366x768 panel which is bright and offers good contrast and vivid colour reproduction. While it can't offer the resolution or the quality of Acer Aspire 8943G's HD display, we were very happy with the image quality and actually preferred it to that of the HP Pavilion dv6. There's no Blu-ray drive or remote control included.

We found the sound quality to be really rather disappointing. The Samsung RF510-S02UK's tinny speakers are simply no match for any of the competitors with enhanced sound systems.

OUR VERDICT

The Samsung RF510-S02UK is a great performer at a very good price, with unique features such as USB 3.0. However, as an all-round entertainment laptop we found it a little lacking.
