When it comes to laptops, Samsung probably isn't the first name that springs to mind. It's a manufacturer that's easy to overlook in a market dominated by the likes of Dell and HP - but this would be a real shame, because the firm's laptops, such as the Samsung NP-X60, are worth serious consideration.

This isn't a particularly cheap model, but the rather high price buys you a premium mix of ingredients, including a tasty Intel T7200 Core 2 Duo processor running at 2GHz. This is partnered with a usable, if slightly stingy, 1GB of system RAM.

One of the X60's highlights is its 15.4in screen. The dimensions aren't anything to get excited about, but the native resolution has taken a considerable step up. Most 15.4in screens run at a standard 1,280x800, but the X60 has been ramped up to 1,680x1,050 pixels, increasing the work area significantly. Add in a meaty ATI X1700 adaptor providing the muscle behind the scenes and you have a seriously powerful graphical setup.

The rest of the Samsung's specs are pretty much in line with what you'd expect at this price. A 100GB hard drive, a SoundMAX HD audio controller, 802.11 a/b/g wireless facilities, Gigabit LAN and a dual-layer DVD drive round off the main components. Other goodies squeezed in include Bluetooth connectivity, a trio of USB ports and a single FireWire connector. You even get a handy remote control that can be neatly packed away in the PCI slot.

Visually, the sleek casing bears more than a passing resemblance to a Sony Vaio - which is no bad thing. And the X60's good looks haven’t been achieved at the expense of either build quality or portability. The total weight comes in at a reasonable 2.5kg, and it's reassuringly robust. The Samsung breezed through our series of benchmark tests, producing silky framerates and an impressive WorldBench 5 processing-speed score of 107.
