If you're after a portable laptop, but don't want to compromise on processing power, then the Asus M50SV-AS030G is the machine for you.

Equipped with one of Intel's newest Penryn chips, the Asus M50SV-AS030G has a whopping 4GB of RAM - ensuring high performance despite its portable credentials.

Not only does the Asus M50SV-AS030G feature a 2.5GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T9300 chip, but it also includes an Nvidia GeForce 9500M GS graphics chip equipped with 512MB of RAM.

As a result the Asus M50SV-AS030G's performance scores are nothing short of remarkable. It managed to rack up a score of 98 in our WorldBench 6 real-world speed benchmark - one of the highest ever from a portable machine - and it's no slouch when it comes to gaming, achieving 29 frames per second (fps) running the gruelling FEAR graphics test.

The processor and graphics chip aren't the only cutting edge components you'll find on the Asus M50SV-AS030G - it also features an eSATA (external SATA) port, so you can hook it up to high speed external drives and transfer data up to six times faster than with USB 2.0. If you're after a portable laptop, but don't want to compromise on processing power, then the Asus M50SV-AS030G is the machine for you.

Despite its high specification, though, there are some areas that don't quite match up. For example - there's a high definition multimedia interface (HDMI) port so you can connect up the Asus M50SV-AS030G to an HDTV, but no HD optical drive.

Despite being loaded with 4GB of RAM the Asus M50SV-AS030G comes with only a 32bit version of Windows Vista Ultimate - which can make use of only 3GB RAM.

Battery life is a little on the short side at only 87 minutes and the Asus M50SV-AS030G is also not the most stylish laptop in the world, although it is pleasant enough to look at.

OUR VERDICT

The Asus M50SV-AS030G is blazingly fast for a portable machine and Asus has mostly employed high spec components, but it can't always make the most of them. With an asking price of £1,149 it's a little on the high side, but it's not exorbitant when you look at what you're getting for your money.
