Take a well-known Taiwanese electronics manufacturer and an established name from the Italian sports car market. Put them together and what do you get? "The Acer Ferrari," we hear you cry. Guess again.

Asus and Lamborghini have come together – albeit somewhat later than Acer and Ferrari – and made a high-end laptop PC into a status symbol. There's a smart badge, a carbon-fibre-effect chassis and an opening mechanism similar to a car bonnet.

Like its motoring namesake, the Lamborghini is fast. We took it for a spin with our WorldBench 5 processing-speed test suite and its score of 111 makes it the joint record holder for a laptop. This is down to a dual-core Intel T2500 processor running at 2GHz. The 2GB of DDR RAM played its part, too.

The screen is remarkable. It may not be widescreen but it gives deep, rich colours, without suffering from excessive glare.

We were surprised by the rapid frame rates achieved with a GeForce Go 7400VX graphics card.

There's plenty of storage, with a 160GB hard drive and Panasonic DVD writer to hand. Wi-Fi facilities are good and a Bluetooth mouse is included.

The design takes ergonomic and aesthetic factors into account. There's a good-size keyboard, the optical drive is well placed and connector ports are on the sides.

OUR VERDICT

We'd quibble about the cost, but putting Lamborghini's name on your product is a licence to add a few hundred pounds. We can't take issue with the build or quality of the components. This is a top-notch PC – if you can afford it.
