We've looked at another gamers' notebook this month in the shape of the Alienware Area-51m 7700, and although the AJP is intended to be more of an all-rounder, it gives the Alienware quite a run for its money on gaming power.

With a 2GHz Intel Pentium M 760, 1GB of DDR RAM, a 256MB ATI Mobility Radeon X700 graphics card and an excellent 15.4in widescreen display, the AJP is geared up for good visual performance.

And it delivers - achieving 44.1fps (frames per second) and 63.2fps at a resolution of 1,024x768 on Doom3 and Halo respectively, the AJP should be able to handle even the latest games without a problem. The frame rates did drop when the resolution was upped to 1,280x1,024, though.

In terms of battery life, we got just over two and a half hours of life out of the AJP. This isn't a great score, but it's more of a desktop replacement model – not the sort of thing you'd be carrying about too often. It weighs only 3.4kg, mind, so you could if you really wanted.

Storage and backup are covered by an 80GB hard drive and a dual-layer DVD writer, as you'd probably expect at this price. Connectivity options are good – interestingly, AJP has opted for a serial port but not a parallel connection. There's no VGA-out either; instead, you get DVI-out.

We were impressed by the wireless options. In fact, the only problem we could find with the AJP was the distinct lack of software.
