We're not so sure we can refer to the AJP D900T as a notebook - it's more of a ledger. Weighing in at 5.2kg, the AJP resembles a paving slab. It's nearly 5cm thick, 40cm wide and 30cm deep and is one of the largest 'portables' we've seen. It is solid and sturdy and feels as if it has been built to last.

There are some pretty chunky components inside the D900T too. Using PCI Express architecture, the AJP has 4.1GBps (gigabytes per second) of bandwidth. This allows the D900T to run much faster than it would using standard PCI technology. It uses high-performance DDR2 RAM memory modules and as it has a 3.4GHz Intel Pentium 4E processor you'd expect the AJP to be a very quick system.

However, it managed only 83 points in WorldBench 5. It seems that Intel's chips just cannot match up to AMD's 32bit performance in our benchmarks and the fact that the AJP is 17 points away from our base system's score proves our point.

Where the performance of the AJP was outstanding, though, was in our graphics tests. We've not seen any notebook score as highly as the D900T and it beats many desktop systems.

A frame rate of 63.7fps (frames per second) was recorded at a resolution of 1,024x768 in Doom 3 and 48.5fps in Halo at the same resolution. This is largely thanks to the 256MB PCI Express nVidia GeForce Go 6800 graphics processor. It also has one of the best screens we've seen on a notebook - the colour depth is brilliant and the image incredibly sharp.

OUR VERDICT

It's a chunky piece of kit, but the D900T is very high quality. The PCI Express architecture means it won't age too quickly but in terms of productivity it still can't compete with Athlon 64bit CPU-based systems. Our other major gripe is the high price tag.
