The Acer Aspire 8942G is a huge beast of a laptop offering a rich multimedia experience. But is it worth the price of admission? Read our review of the Acer Aspire 8942G-526G64Bi to find out.

Its massive 18in display makes the Acer Aspire 8942G-526G64Bi great for multimedia and gaming and its physical size provides plenty of room for sockets and components. Included are a total of five USB 2.0 ports and a six-channel sound system, complete with subwoofer.

A full-size backlit keyboard is provided with the Acer Aspire 8942G-526G64Bi, incorporating a numeric keypad one-touch backup, wireless and Bluetooth on/off as well as a “Powersmart” button which enables battery-saving technologies without the need to adjust your Windows settings. To the far right, and illuminated more brightly than the rest of the keyboard are Acer’s MediaControl buttons which allow you to play, pause and skip tracks just like on a regular DVD player. Underneath is a large rotary volume control.

The 1920 by 1080 pixel display can display full-HD films at the resolution for which they were intended and is the perfect companion to an internal Blu-ray drive which also functions as a fast DVD burner. Inside the Acer Aspire 8942G-526G64Bi, you get a 640GB hard drive with an empty bay ready to install a second one, should you need even more storage.

Thankfully, together with the monster size comes some pretty monstrous performance. The Acer Aspire 8942G-526G64Bi's Intel Core i5-520M processor is the same 2.4GHz chip used in Apple's MacBook Pro and in this case it propels the Acer to a chart-leading 109 points in our WorldBench 6 application test.

Being a gaming and multimedia laptop, the Acer Aspire 8942G-526G64Bi wouldn’t be complete without a fast graphics processor and the ATI Mobility Radeon HD5850 is one of the quickest available, sending it to an impressive WorldBench 6 speed benchmark of 109.

Considering its enormous screen and powerful components, the Acer Aspire 8942G-526G64Bi boasts an impressively long battery life. It lasted over four hours in the MobileMark 2007 productivity test (242 minutes, 228 minutes at performance settings). Weighing over 4.5kg it’s obviously not something you’d want to whip out on the bus to fire off a quick email.
