Smart and stylish, the Samsung YP-T10 media player packs a host of features in a compact user-friendly design.

Simply put, the Samsung YP-T10 has more on offer than any other media player in that price range and holds its own in an iPod-dominated market.

The Samsung YP-T10 scores first for its solid body and pleasing design. The front is covered with a glossy translucent plastic with a white base. The vibrant 2in QVGA screen is off set by backlit touch sensitive controls that are situated along its base.

The back-brushed aluminum cover minimises shock when dropped and the scratches that shiny surfaces are prone to is not an issue with the Samsung YP-T10. The lack of a miniUSB port forced us to stick with its proprietary cable.

We reviewed a 2GB Samsung YP-T10, there are both 4GB and 8GB versions as well. The interface is user friendly and intuitive with different customisable settings.

The Samsung YP-T10 supports MP3, WMA and Ogg files but no AAC. Its FM Radio has autoscan feature with recording.

Video playback is supported but only for WMV files transferred via Samsung Media Studio software or Windows Media Player and Samsung’s proprietary SVI format. Others useful features include Voice Recorder, Text Viewer, Image Viewer and RSS reader.

You can transfer files using the drag and drop option on Windows Explorer or through the Media Studio application. Bluetooth v2 support is another useful feature that we don’t normally see in other players to let us stream music wirelessly. The built-in battery can only be charged via the data cable connected to a PC. Bundled accessories include a stereo headphone, a data cable and a Quick Start Guide.

Smart and stylish, the Samsung YP-T10 media player packs a host of features in a compact user-friendly design.

After the recommended three hours of initial charging, we started loading our media files and with the USB 2.0 support we filled up 2GB of memory in no time. Once fully charged, it took a quick 8 seconds to boot up which was really impressive.

The interface was easy to use and the overall response during our operations was fast though there was a slight lag while switching EQ presets. The sensitive controls require precise handling but that is easy enough to get used to.

We started our test with the bundled headphones at normal preset mode on EQ. The player sounded loud without any distortion even at maximum level. Middle frequencies were clear but the highs and lows were not as clean as what the iPod nano and Cowon iAudio deliver. Its true quality was revealed when we plugged in better headphones from Sony and Sennheiser.

The bass sounded deeper, and mids were clearer but the higher frequencies were too bright and there was some loss of detail. This made the Samsung YP-T10 more suited to playing commercial Pop, Hip-Hop or Rock.

Audiophiles may not fall in love with it but for casual listeners the Samsung YP-T10 delivers a richer and warmer sound than other budget MP3 players.

The Samsung YP-T10's 2in display is just right for viewing short clips and trailers which looked crisp and vibrant. The FM radio reception was average, while recording features work fine for both voice and FM.

Recorded audio files were saved in MP3 format at 96kbps. The Bluetooth feature worked fine and file transfer feature was enabled once we updated the firmware which was previously unavailable. The Samsung YP-T10's battery life for audio and video playback is rated at 30 hours and 4 hours respectively which is average.

OUR VERDICT

The Samsung YP-T10 is a well-constructed, simple to use media player. Sonically, it may not beat the iPod nano yet but if you’re in the market for a smart, feature-rich MP3 player, the T10 is for you.
