There's currently a big demand for gadgets that can display photos as well as offering music on the move, so the Yepp YH-925 from Samsung, one of only a handful of truly capacious portable players around, ought to do alright - even if it lacks some of the refinement of its rivals.

As well as playing MP3s and displaying pictures, the Yepp features an FM radio, a teeny microphone and sound recorder, a line-in and a headphone jack. When recording audio, you can choose between 32 and 44kHz, with bit rates ranging from 96 to 160kbps (kilobits per second).

Tracks are transferred to and from the player via a bland interface called the Samsung Music Studio. As for photos, the YH-925 is seen by the PC as a separate hard disk and you can drop and drop images into its Upload folder.

Oddly, the pics aren't stored in the Albums folder, nor automatically imported into the Slide Show menu. Instead, you'll find them in the Upload Album folder. For here, you can scroll through them at varying rates depending on their size.

A point to note: the current menu icon is permanently displayed at the top of the LCD screen and the item playing is listed at the bottom, so you effectively have a landscape area in which to view your photos. They display well, but Samsung hasn't thought to include either zoom or rotate options so portraits are that much smaller.

Looks-wise it's similar to the Creative Zen Sleek, with a silver brushed-aluminium casing that is somewhat unassuming by comparison with, say, Olympus's m:robe or variations on the iPod.

The Yepp's 1.8in TFT colour screen shows only five files at a time. You can't scroll through album or track listings as quickly as with the scrollwheels of Apple or Creative players, but it's still fairly efficient.

OUR VERDICT

The YH-925 isn't as polished as other hard-drive-based players but it's not badly priced. It's unlikely that thieves with a penchant for digital audio players will be targeting the YH-925 if there's anyone around with a recent iPod.
