Despite being relatively expensive, Apple's iPods are undisputed kings among portable digital music players. So popular are they that a market has sprung up supplying add-ons and adaptors for these ubiquitous and stylish gadgets.

This good-looking little toy, manufactured by Apple itself, provides both remote-control and FM radio-tuner functions.

Simply attach the supplied cable to the base of your player, hook up the provided headphones and you're good to go.

As with all Apple products, ease of use is paramount. The intuitive iPod clickwheel is replicated on the petite remote interface. It takes a few seconds to work out how to tune the radio, but once it's set up with favourites – a straightforward procedure in itself – experienced poddies will be able to flick around the FM dial using only a thumb.

Another regular Apple trait is style, and the Radio Remote fits the bill here, too. Small, simple and lightweight, it certainly looks the part. And it comes with a smart silver clip to attach to your clothing. The proliferation of thin wires did worry us slightly, as they could easily become tangled or damaged. And the Remote is mostly made of plastic, so it may require some TLC to keep it looking smart.

You get a pair of Apple's iPod headphones. As well as an open invitation to muggers to steal your player, we think these look a bit naff. We found them uncomfortable and weren't impressed by the sound quality. Most people will, of course, already have headphones.

Radio reception is fairly robust, helped by the fact that you can specify the exact frequency. Once you set the radio region to Europe, the tuner will immediately search for all major FM stations.

OUR VERDICT

Remote-control functionality will be welcomed by joggers and commuters alike. Radio is easy to set up and we can't criticise the lack of an AM option – no manufacturers seem to bother with this these days. We weren't convinced by the headphones or the general build quality, however, and £35 seems a trifle steep.
