The compact Aiptek PenCam Trio HD is the third generation of Aiptek’s ultraportable PenCam. This device includes three main features that it has fitted into a smaller structure: a 720p high-definition camcorder, a 5-megapixel digital camera and an audio recorder.

The slim, all-in-one Aiptek PenCam Trio HD package also contains an MP3 player, reducing the need for carrying around multiple devices.

With the Aiptek PenCam Trio HD's 4GB of built-in flash storage, the PenCam can capture around 100 minutes of HD video.

The Aiptek PenCam Trio HD will last up to 80 hours between battery charges playing audio from its lithium rechargeable battery, and takes around three hours to charge via USB.

The PenCam Trio weighs just 75g and is about the size of a fat marker pen, making it convenient to slip inside of a pocket when not in use. The casing comes in five different colours: silver, black, pink, electric blue and a bright red.

When shooting video, footage is slightly grainy and can take a while to initially focus. It’s a very lightweight device and is susceptible to some camera shake.

The video motion was smooth and the frame-rate reasonable. The microphone is sufficient but the audio it captures can at times sound a little thin and scratchy.

It can be a struggle to view media on the 1.1in (28mm) OLED screen; however this isn't necessarily a major concern as its content can be transferred onto a Windows or Mac without becoming a strenuous task.

The Aiptek PenCam Trio HD can also be plugged directly into a HDTV via HDMI, creating a wide range of viewing options to choose from. It comes with embedded Windows-only compatible software that features a "direct YouTube upload", which is handy.

There are minimal physical buttons and scrolling through menus is straight-forward enough. Although the Aiptek PenCam Trio HD is not sold as primarily an audio recorder or dictaphone, it would benefit from a built-in speaker to give quick feedback on what’s been recorded.

OUR VERDICT

The AipTek PenCam Trio HD contains some useful capabilities, all housed in a convenient and simple-to-use device. However, the PenCam shouldn't be considered unique or innovative as most smartphones now include all these features and more, with better quality. At a price of around £60 it’s a little expensive.
