They travel through the sea of Tranquility to the island of Infinity where the last one of each species goes to live when it's extinct. The adventure continues with Moog and Rockford discovering a secret that they must tell the world.

Rockford's Rock Opera

It's an educational story which teaches children about extinction and how they should value every living thing - everything is here for a reason yet many species are becoming extinct every day.

The story - originally an audiobook and now an animated musical with CGI sequences - is presented across four separate apps with four chapters in each. The first app is available free on the App Store; the other three cost £2.99 each.

Rockford Part 1

Each chapter plays as a video (there are video portions and slideshow portions) and you get extras in each app such as links to each song, background information on extinction and Rockford's Christmas app. It's a shame there's no bookmark facility as the videos always play from the beginning instead of carrying on from where you last stopped, but each chapter is less than 15 minutes so all are watchable in one go.

Rockford's Rock Opera is aimed at 6-12-year-olds but can also be enjoyed by even younger (and older) kids. The colourful visuals are captivating and the songs, which range from rock to pop, are catchy. There's two and a half hours in total, enough to span a couple of weeks' bedtime stories.

Given that the entire production was made on a G5 Mac in an attic in London by a handful of people, it's all the more impressive. Comedian Steve Punt voices a couple of the characters and wrote the script, adding kudos.

OUR VERDICT

A psychedelic, original and fun story which will keep kids transfixed for the duration (and likely most adults too). It works on both the iPad and iPhone, but it's much better on the iPad's bigger screen.
