If you use an Apple iPad, chances are that you currently open PDFs in iBooks or via the iPad’s Quick Look feature. This is all well and good until you need to edit said documents. Yet even when only used as a PDF viewer, PDF Expert shines.

You can swipe through each page, tap at either side of a page to move back and forth or use a slider to move through larger documents.

The app identifies a table of contents and lets you navigate to sections by tapping a heading. Standard pinch-to-zoom controls apply and you can search large documents for words or phrases.

PDF Expert users get a free Readdle Storage account so they can access files via the web in PDF Expert’s Network section. Files can also be synced to a range of online services including MobileMe and Dropbox or to the desktop via iTunes or a simple WebDav server.

Editing is PDF Expert’s real strength, with a set of simple yet incredibly useful tools available, including digital signing, bookmarking and notes, as well as text highlights, annotation and underlining. These alterations can all be saved to the document and viewed in other PDF readers.

PDF Expert lets you do pretty much anything you possibly can do with a PDF.

You can fill in fields quickly and easily and check boxes on documents with fields, plus use radio buttons.

Using a Bluetooth keyboard to fill in forms, we did encounter a few crashes but hopefully that will be fixed in a future update. The ability to sign a document with your finger and embed it is also a bonus.
