The Philips Fidelio DS9/10 is a speaker that doesn’t support Apple AirPlay music streaming, but you use it to tune in to internet radio stations.

If you’re on the lookout for an iPod, iPhone and iPad dock with a striking design and can’t stretch to an ultra-desirable Bowers & Wilkins Zeppelin Air, then the Philips Fidelio DS9/10 sound dock is certainly worth a look.

The Philips Fidelio DS9/10 is a heavyweight speaker in more than one sense: the solid wood construction means it weighs in at 5.5kg. The curved design of the speaker dock helps reduce vibrations and prevent distortion. The result is impressive, natural sound.

The Philips Fidelio DS9/10 has a pair of 1in tweeters and two 4in dome woofers, each producing 50 Watts of power. There are two volume buttons on the speaker itself, but no other buttons.

As with many such products, there’s a free Fidelio media controller app for the iPhone or iPad docked in the Philips Fidelio DS9/10. The Fidelio+ app offers preset equaliser options to further enhance the sound, along with the ability to turn the dock into an alarm clock. Note that this device does not support Apple AirPlay, however.

OUR VERDICT

The Philips Fidelio DS9 is a very likable iPod and iPad speaker dock that offers exceptionally good audio output and is very keenly priced. It doesn't support Apple AirPlay music streaming, but you can play streamed music from services such as Napster as well as internet radio stations.
