Avant Force Avant Browser 2013 review

Avant Browser isn't simply a skinned version of someone else’s web browser. For a start, it includes the three main rendering engines: Webkit, Gecko and Trident as used by Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox and Microsoft Internet Explorer. Lunascape also manages this trick, but where that browser fails, this one succeeds.

The engines used by Avant are just one step behind the latest versions (at the time of review) and web pages can be viewed as Chrome v25, Firefox 19 or Internet Explorer. With Internet Explorer, you get whichever version is installed on your machine. This makes them almost as good as the native browsers for performance and HTML5 standards compatibility.

Over 20 different colour schemes and themes are provided, although the default one is the best. It has a Firefox-like button in the top-left corner for accessing the menus and there are lots of useful features. You can set the default rendering engine; the current page can be reloaded in a different engine from the right-click menu and you can view a page in three different engines on three different tabs. That’s useful for web developers, but also for everyone else on occasions where you find a page that doesn’t work properly with the current engine.

There are options to automatically refresh the current page or all tabs, at intervals between 10 seconds and 10 minutes. That's handy for news pages, sports, stock markets and other sites which display live data.

There's an ad blocker that removes unwanted adverts on web pages while pictures, Flash, sounds, videos and other page elements can be disabled for a faster, cleaner browsing experience. An interesting feature opens all images in a new tab.

Avant Downloader manages all your downloads and gives you the option to shut down your PC when the last one is complete. That could be useful for downloading big files at the end of the day: you start it going and walk away.

Web pages can be saved as HTML, text, or as an image. You can even select any part to be saved as an image, which is useful for clipping content from pages.
