Wireless printers aren't exactly novel, but you don't find many as good as the Deskjet 460wbt from HP. Setting aside one or two minor design issues, the Deskjet combines great functionality with portability.

It looks very good but HP's designers have had to balance the issues of weight and solidity - and they haven't been 100 percent successful. Though at 2.2kg it's not heavy, bits of the 460bwt feel flimsy. Certainly, installing the ink cartridges wasn't the most confidence-inspiring process, but after setup it was fine.

The Deskjet is quick for its size but nothing like as fast as HP claims. Rather than 17ppm (pages per minute) of text, it manages only 9.5ppm, outputting the first page in 10 seconds. When printing text and graphics in colour, it managed 8ppm.

Printing a borderless 4x6in photograph took two minutes and 30 seconds at the highest setting and the quality was supreme. We're big fans of HP's Vivera inks at PC Advisor and they are put to great effect here. However, the quality in fast-draft mode is so impressive that for everyday use, you wouldn't need to go near the top setting.

A Bluetooth card and a Wi-Fi card are provided, and it's a simple process to communicate without wires. However, you can't manipulate photos on mobile devices before printing, because the 460wbt has no screen.

One criticism of the Deskjet is that it's quite expensive to run. Colour prints work out at about 6.1p each.

OUR VERDICT

It looks great and produces good-quality prints at a rate that belies its size. Build quality isn't all it could be, perhaps, but this is nevertheless an excellent solution for people who want to share a printer between multiple PCs.
