The Epson P50 is a single function printer that seems strangely bare of extras.

While we can understand that not everyone wants a printer that can also scan and copy, we would expect many of today’s customers to expect such luxuries as Wi-Fi or colour screens. The Epson P50 looks quite a substantial printer though, and the glossy gently sloping case gives it rather more allure than you might expect.

The Epson P50 comes with a 120-sheet paper tray, but the feature set of this printer isn’t outstanding. Only a USB interface is provided, with no provision for any kind of network (wired or otherwise). You can print directly to DVD and CD media, although there are no auto duplexing facilities. Images can be read from memory cards and USB sticks, although without a screen, this feature isn’t particularly easy to use.

In use, the Epson P50 is a fairly swift model - its time of 18 seconds for a standard A4 print is beaten only by the very best photo printers. The Epson P50 struggles to match up to the quality of its rivals, howver. The colours in the standard quality mode are a little garish, and some of the images are poorly rendered. Neither are a number of the lines perfectly drawn. Things do improve in the top quality mode, and it retains decent speed while still lagging behind many of its competitors on image quality. Glossy prints are very capable, although the Epson isn’t particularly distinctive here.

With running costs within a few notches of the 7p mark, colour prints aren’t cheap using the Epson P50’s six-colour system. Mono prints are rather more economical, but this printer won’t prove a particularly good buy for frequent users.

OUR VERDICT

A reasonable quality, reasonably well priced single function printer, the Epson P50 struggles to make its mark against printers that have greater features sets or produce better prints. It's by no means a bad printer, however, and it is a fairly swift operator.
