At £50 the V-Moda Vibe headphones aren't exactly cheap, but you could spend a lot more than this on headphones and not hear any better audio.

More to the point, the V-Moda Vibe Modafones allow very little sound to escape, so if you're an unreconstructed noise polluter, you may find that your colleagues club together to buy you a pair. And if you're prepared to pay £250 for an iPod, you may as well spend a bit more to avoid everything sounding as though it's underwater and ditch the bundled Apple earbuds.

The V-Moda Vibe earbuds are about as stylish as in-ear headphones can be. The pair we tested were gun-metal black, and certainly added a little chic to your reviewer as he shambled about town.

The bit of the V-Moda Vibes that sticks in your ear (stop me if I'm being too technical) is thinner than your average earbud, and has that smart-looking metal finish. And they're available in several different shades of metal.

Your comfort is taken care of with a friendly and discreet silicon sleeve and, at 12g, the V-Moda Vibe Modafones are ultra-light without feeling too flimsy. There are three sizes of silicon fitting bundled (eight in all), so even the BFG should be able to listen for hours without getting sore ears.

In use the V-Moda Vibe Modafones fit snugly in your lugholes. We gave them a good thrashing at the gym and even ridiculous amounts of sweat failed to shift them from our ears. The wires are lengthy and adjustable, so you can make the fit perfect for your chosen activity (and noggin' size).

Of course, comfort would be nothing without sound quality, and we've definitely heard better headphones than the V-Moda Vibes. But for £50 the audio quality is surprisingly good. If you're used to inexpensive headphones, you'll hear parts of the music you've never heard before.

Bass, midtones and treble all sound clear, and you can whack up the volume to 'ear-bleeding' without hearing distortion.

As do all standard 3.5mm in-ear headphone cables, the V-Moda Vibe Modafones' wires feel a tad fragile. You won't want to spend £50 on them and then stretch the cable. Fortunately a leather pouch is provided. And the gold-plated jack itself has a pleasingly robust feel. As a 3.5mm jack, it will be compatible with all iPods and other digital audio players, as well as CD players and so on. Some phones and PDAs alone will reject the V-Moda Vibes.
