The MSI NX8600GT T2D256E Overclocked is a solid graphics card, with updated technology. But as you might expect from a sub-£100 graphics card, the MSI NX8600GT T2D256E Overclocked is no miracle worker.

When it comes to impulse buys, few computer products fly off the shelves like a sub-£100 graphics card. The performance might not be astounding but these cards really catch the eye.

Like the PNY GeForce 8600 GTS 256MB, the MSI NX8600GT T2D256E Overclocked is aiming for a mass-market audience. The 128bit memory interface and 32 stream processors of the 8600 GTS have been retained but the core and memory clock speeds are inferior – MSI has tried to bridge that gap by slightly upping the clock speeds.

Performance isn't particularly startling. In our real-world games tests, the MSI NX8600GT T2D256E Overclocked overhauled the similarly priced 7900 GS in only two of the four titles – with its Fear score being particularly lamentable. The 8600 GT does have plenty of features that the ageing 7900 GS lacks, although the much-vaunted DirectX 10.0 support is likely to be a damp squib.

OUR VERDICT

The MSI NX8600GT T2D256E Overclocked is a solid effort, but no more than that. It has the drop on the older technology that it replaces, but only just.
