Following on from the excellent PNY 320MB GeForce 8800 GTS card comes this even better version from Asus. Not only is it cheaper, but it comes with a free copy of Ghost Recon. And this is one of the best deals on the market. While it may be no match for the all-conquering 8800 GTX, nor even for the 640MB version of the 8800 GTS, the Asus is still a powerful card.

The 320bit memory interface remains impressive compared to non-8800 cards, while the core and memory clock produce a respectable memory bandwidth of 64GBps. The traditional vertex and pixel shaders are replaced with stream processors capable of operating as either, and 96 of these are built into the card.

There's support for DirectX 10.0 although, given this card's rather meagre helping of memory, it's not easy to tell how effective it will be at running intensive DirectX 10.0 games once these become widespread. Still, it's cheap enough for you to buy it for today's games, and replace it in a year or two with something a little meatier.

OUR VERDICT

This is the top choice for anyone who wants to play today's games in style, but doesn't want to splash out for a card that could soon be in need of an upgrade.
