When it comes to PC upgrades, the power supply is all too often overlooked. If it needs replacing or upgrading, it can be all too tempting to buy the cheapest you can find and hope for the best. See also: With PC PSUs, less can be more expensive.

However premium power supply units (PSUs), such as the In Win Commander 850W model from In Win, can keep your PC running more quietly and cooler while ensuring adequate juice for any power-hungry upgrades.

In Win is probably best known for its range of innovatively designed PC system cases, and the company has continued with this emphasis on design in its Commander series of PSUs.

With a decidedly military appearance, the In Win Commander 850W PSU comes packaged in a camouflage-patterned casework - a theme which continues on to the fold-out multi-language instruction sheet which, as a consequence, suffers somewhat from a lack of readability.

Inside, the In Win Commander 850W PSU itself is a plain matt dark green stencilled with yellow logos designed to resemble military-style paint.

The base of the In Win Commander 850W is taken up with a huge 14cm fan which keeps it cool with the minimum of noise.

The In Win Commander 850W's modular cabling system helps keep your system case tidy by allowing you to connect up only the cables you actually require to power up the components in your particular PC. This minimises mess and helps keep clear airflow, aiding internal cooling.

Each socket on the In Win Commander 850W PSU is fitted with a removable plastic cap and a small descriptive icon is provided to help you determine the correct PC connections for each port.

It's particularly nice to see that In Win has provided a Velcro pouch to store all your unused cables and caps tidily for later use. There's also a draw-string bag provided so you can safely store the In Win Commander 850W itself without damage.

Each of the supplied selection of cables is clearly labelled and wrapped in an attractive and protective flexible mesh. Four split 6-pin/8-pin PCI Express cables are provided which allow connection of dual graphics cards for high-performance gaming systems.

The In Win Commander 850W's standard-level 80 Plus certification ensures that it delivers power efficiency, and although we've tested PSUs with greater efficiency this is still a step-up from many basic power supplies supplied as standard with PCs.
