MyGuide started out as a German company providing overlay maps to companies producing GPS units. Until now, it hasn't been selling its own products over here, but has garnered awards on the continent.

The firm's product differs from that of its many rivals in that you get Europe-wide coverage crammed on to a single memory card. MyGuide has selected maps based on the best level of detail available on a country-by-country basis, then stitched them together smoothly across borders.

The 5000 did a decent job of guiding us around northern France. What it didn't excel at was getting us from Brighton to a location in south-east London. We required only three main roads to reach our destination, but it hauled us off on an unnecessary diversion around the badlands of Brixton. One turning shy of arrival, it came up with another wild goose chase all around the borough.

The MyGuide's looks didn't impress us any more than its brains. The firm has put together a far more compact unit than the Evesham Nav-Cam 7500 TMC, complete with a stronger-than-average cradle, but it doesn't bother with physical buttons. You have to manage everything on the 3.5in touchscreen – not ideal when you're hurtling down the M53.

OUR VERDICT

The MyGuide SilverGuide 5000 NAV didn't particularly impress us with its navigation skills, more than once choosing a needlessly lengthy route. This package includes some nice extras, though, including good European map coverage, and the battery life is decent.
