The AA branding on the Navigator Vive will reassure those new to satnav devices, but others will want to know what's been sacrificed to make this the lowest priced option in our round-up. It's compact and light and fits easily into a pocket, so you needn't leave your £150 device sitting in your car's glove compartment. It switches on very quickly, has a solid flip-up GPS receiver and is straightforward to use – you're ready to input your first journey within seconds of switching on.

Navigating the onscreen menu is simple enough, but it's hardly inspiring. The 3D maps, in particular, are functional but not aesthetically pleasing. Roads are blocky and we were confused at times by the different coloured road markings used to explain the route we were supposed to take.
Nor does it always update quickly, sometimes taking the best part of a minute to get a GPS lock or to calculate a lengthy route. However, the Vive benefits from the AA's extensive database of POIs – anything from hotels and B&Bs to pubs and petrol stations are clearly marked on the map.

You get six months of free updates to its speed camera database, after which, you'll have to pay a £30-per-year subscription to keep up to date.

OUR VERDICT

A good-looking, great value GPS unit, let down by a clunky interface.
