This review appears in the September issue of PC Advisor, available now in all good newsagents.

With just a few names dominating the entry-level to mid-range accounts software market, choice is limited. Nevertheless, MYOB (Mind Your Own Business) is a front-runner.

Version 15.0 doesn't offer any earth-shattering new features, but it does come with a long list of worthy but minor improvements. It's a sign of product maturity when a vendor can no longer add major features to a product that already has 'the lot'.

The software boasts MYOB's usual hallmark: a simple and user-friendly front-end. While more graphic than most, visually the user interface remains relatively unchanged.

Below the icon bar is a flowchart for each module, showing further options. As a result, getting to grips with it presents a shallow learning curve. Click on 'Accounts' and you have access to your income and expense account information. MYOB includes a full nominal ledger with balance sheet, if needed.

The 'Banking' option remains one of the nicer features. A well-designed reconciliation facility lets you download your online bank statement. Matching transactions are automatically reconciled and eliminated, leaving unmatched transactions highlighted for review.

The 'Sales' side of MYOB Accounting Plus reflects the joined-up thinking found throughout the program. MYOB's reporting side is pretty strong, too, with almost two hundred predefined reports to choose from. You even get an elementary contact manager.

OUR VERDICT

Accounts Plus is a powerful and user-friendly package for the SME (small-to-medium enterprise). But the improvements in 15.0 aren't enough to tempt 14.0 users.
