Mamut provides a range of software for SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises) covering accounting, CRM (customer-relationship management), inventory and e-commerce. Enterprise 5.5 is its most comprehensive package.

While this is a complex piece of software, the interface is sleek and elegant. The Desktop provides an overview of activities and orders, as well as a snapshot of your current financial status. Each of the other sections (such as customer or project management) works through a series of flowcharts. Select the activity you need to do, click an icon and a window appears for you to enter data.

As one example of how this works in practice, 'Sales' starts with a product that can then be tracked through quotations, orders, invoice and delivery, with plenty of options to cover such things as debtors and credit notices. The stylish front end covers the fact that this comprises a complex series of databases, so any team will require training to get the most out of Mamut's software. Nevertheless, end users will be able to dip into a process at any point along the way and generate management reports. While some features, such as e-commerce, fall behind competitors such as Actinic, the virtue of using a package such as this is that every feature of day-to-day practice can be flagged pretty much instantly.

Thus, while you are updating a website, the desktop keeps you informed of other activities that you will need to track (such as meetings or project deadlines).

OUR VERDICT

For those who do not wish to consolidate all aspects of business management into one package, the company's other applications consist of cheaper tools customised for CRM, accounting or e-commerce. Despite the complexity of information brought together in one suite, the interface is a real delight to use. The cost is fairly expensive, although Mamut also sells older versions of this package at half that price.
