The Brilliance 241P4QPYES is designed for an office environment, but that’s no reason to discount it for home use. It’s a 24in display with a full-HD native resolution, a rotate- and height-adjustable stand, a four-port USB hub and a slew of power-saving features. See also: Group test: what's the best display?

The stand incorporates a slot for routing cables to its VGA, DVI and DisplayPort inputs. The latter could be useful if your graphics card demands a DisplayPort interface for running a third monitor. It’s still possible to connect HDMI devices using an HDMI-to-DVI cable. Visit Group test: What's the best 19 to 24-inch LCD monitor?

The Brilliance isn’t as beautiful to behold as some of the competition, but the silver bezel and black base are made from 65 percent recycled plastic, making it more eco-friendly than most.

Saving the environment was clearly high on Philips’ list of priorities in designing the 241P4QPYES, which has an infrared sensor that’s able to detect when you’re not sitting at the screen and put it into standby mode. You can adjust the sensitivity of this feature and, of course, there’s a proper on/off switch, too. We recorded 30W power consumption at maximum brightness, and 18W at 120cd/m2.

We’re not keen on the touch-sensitive controls, which can be difficult to locate with no tactile guidance, but Philips includes a Windows-only configuration utility in the box.

The Philips’ LED-backlit AMVA panel offers excellent contrast – 1,691:1 in our tests – with deep blacks and bright whites. This helps the display to retain the detail in both shadows and bright objects. We measured a maximum brightness of 299cd/m2.

The Philips proved able to display 93 percent of the sRGB gamut (the highest on test), and 81 percent of NTSC.

Viewing angles are also very good – 178 degrees both horizontal and vertical, according to Philips. This means the colours and contrast won’t shift as you move your head from side to side.

The 12ms response time isn’t the fastest here, but should be fine for playing games; we didn’t spot any blurring or lag.
