BenQ has built up a reputation as a maker of budget-friendly displays that don't compromise on quality. And the relatively cheap BenQ G2400W impressed us in a number of respects – notably its gaming performance and range of ports.

Unfortunately, picture quality didn't consistently match the stunners elsewhere in this price bracket, while the BenQ G2400W's physical appearance is understated, verging on drab.

The BenQ G2400W comes with a DVI, VGA and high-definition multimedia interface (HDMI) – something of a rarity in this product area, even in the upper price bracket.

The BenQ G2400W is pretty much plug-and-play, with a simple setup process and automatic screen adjustment. The manufacturer's built-in Senseye technology – which offers Standard, Dynamic, Movie and Photo presets – provides instant optimal settings. The screen can be tilted back and forth to a limited degree to aid viewing.

A response time of 5ms – this indicates how often the screen is refreshed, with lower figures indicating smooth playback of moving images – may be nothing special when compared to rival models that are currently offering 2ms, but it's not bad for the money. And the BenQ G2400W provides a fluid image that's free from ghosting.

Similarly, while its 1,000:1 contrast ratio is far from exceptional, the BenQ G2400W's Standard mode displays reassuringly natural colours.

Switching to Movie mode ups the saturation, which means flesh tones appear on the warm side, so we opted to stick with Standard. The BenQ G2400W handles fast-moving action and gaming sequences with aplomb, but it doesn't give the sharpest picture when compared to the other screens on test.

It's a shame, too, about the BenQ G2400W's utilitarian appearance and fairly standard feature set. And the larger dimensions means it's
a bit of a hassle to move around, if that's an issue for you.

OUR VERDICT

The BenQ G2400W is sturdy but dull-looking, with few design frills. Picture quality was respectable if slightly lacking in sharpness. An HDMI input is a bonus at this price.
