With Blu-ray and HD-DVD battling it out and Sony pushing its advanced PlayStation 3 console, demand for large, high-resolution screens is increasing with each passing month.

This is good news for the BenQ FP241WZ, which has the feature set and price tag to make it the screen of the moment.

Of course, value for money is a relative term. The BenQ FP241WZ is well priced compared with the competition, but you'll require a healthy bank balance to afford its £645 asking price.

So what does the BenQ FP241WZ offer, besides an expansive 24in screen? As well as the height-adjustable stand and pivot (enabling you to spin the screen through 90 degrees), it comes with a brace of USB ports, component and composite connections and an invaluable HDMI (high-definition multimedia interface) connector.

With the BenQ FP241WZ you get plenty of buttons as well – whether you want to tweak the screen modes or experiment with picture-in-picture, there's a control for almost everything.

You probably won't want to use the BenQ FP241WZ for everyday Windows tasks, since the clarity of text isn't as sharp as we'd like. However, the colour palette is gorgeous.

Gamers will relish the BenQ FP241WZ's depth of shades, and as if the 6ms grey-to-grey response rate wasn't already pretty good for a screen of this size, you also have a useful PerfectMotion function that, to our eyes, did a good job of cutting out any remaining motion blur or ghosting.

Movie fans will find the BenQ FP241WZ an excellent screen for viewing films and TV programmes. The BenQ FP241WZ also allows you to alter the aspect ratio, cutting out unnecessary image stretching when viewing HD (high-definition) 1,920x1,080 content.

OUR VERDICT

For playing games and consoles, or for watching movies or HDTV, the BenQ FP241WZ is an excellent buy. The colour palette is bright and vibrant, and the host of built-in technologies should allow you to fine-tune the picture to suit your tastes. The 24in technology isn't cheap, but compared with the competition, the BenQ FP241WZ runs out a comfortable winner.
