This 22in Acer AL2216WSD is surprisingly light; it actually seems slinkier than one or two of the 19in contenders. This can partially be explained by the fact that the Acer AL2216WSD is part of Acer's Value line-up and therefore dispenses with extras such as built-in speakers. You don't get any USB ports either. Rest assured that both DVI and VGA inputs are included.

Despite its budget price tag, the Acer AL2216WSD's specifications are competitive, with the category-standard 5ms response time and 700:1 contrast ratio. The brightness level is as good as any of the 22in screens we looked at and actually surpassed the costlier ViewSonic and Samsung models.

The Acer AL2216WSD's display is a widescreen version with a 1,680x1,050 native resolution, which enables you to comfortably view two A4 documents side by side. Unfortunately, the Acer AL2216WSD doesn't take kindly to being pushed about and lets you tilt the screen only marginally.

Where it really counts, however, the Acer AL2216WSD comes up with the goods, living up to the promise of its specs with good brightness, contrast and vibrant colours. Our one criticism of its picture quality is that the darker tones lost a modicum of definition. Viewing angles weren't bad. Although we don't think they're as good as the 170 degrees Acer claims. We can't argue with the Acer AL2216WSD's ability to keep pace with fast-paced games and films, though, thanks to the 5ms response time.
