While utilities that compress files are now bundled with just about every application imaginable, the two classic applications still remain WinZip (now owned by Corel) and StuffIt. Stuffit Deluxe 11.0 is probably less familiar to Windows users, but was for a long time the standard zip utility for the Apple Mac.

Of course, as straightforward compression features are now built-in to Windows, the question remains as to why anyone would pay money for an extra utility. Has not the rise of huge hard drives and broadband compromised one of the main reasons for these applications? At £30, why would anyone buy Stuffit Deluxe 11.0?

Is there any point?

Stuffit Deluxe 11.0 promises – and in some cases delivers – better compression for file formats such as Jpeg and MP3, which are already highly packed file formats. The actual amount of compression is typically rather small (generally between 2 and 5 percent). Stuffit Deluxe 11.0, however, handles huge file compressions better than the standard Windows zip utility.

Stuffit Deluxe 11.0 can compress a slightly wider range of file types than this utility, and is the only program that can compress Office 2007 files.

Such facilities alone won't justify the price of Stuffit Deluxe 11.0, but the range of extra features will. If you need to protect the security of your files, Stuffit Deluxe 11.0 offers encryption tools (128bit and 256bit for WinZip, and up to 512bit for StuffIt – although files cannot be opened by other zip applications).

Stuffit Deluxe 11.0 supports a wide range of compression formats, such as RAR and CAB archives. As well as this, you can create self-extracting archives which will open without the need for Stuffit Deluxe 11.0.

These are the basics, which anyone would expect from a compression utility. Where Stuffit Deluxe 11.0 starts to stretch ahead is in terms of its archiving features – Stuffit Deluxe 11.0 is capable of functioning almost as a backup application. You can schedule tasks, as well as burn compressed files directly to CD or DVD.

Stuffit Deluxe 11.0's interface is good in terms of its integration with Microsoft Office. Stuffit Deluxe 11.0, unsurprisingly, has been updated for Windows Vista. Unfortunately Stuffit Deluxe 11.0 can be rather fiddly at times.
