Norton Save & Restore 2.0 is one of the best of the modestly priced drive imaging and backup programs available on the market, with a Vista-compatible version just released.

While the thought of a session with a drive-imaging program may not be the dreamiest of propositions, the potential alternative is positively nightmarish. So you'd be well advised to snap up a good imaging program and spend an afternoon ensuring that, regardless of what befalls your PC, at least you've got a reliable copy of your hard drive and can have your old system files up and running within minutes.

Backup isn't so bad

Norton Save & Restore 2.0 is one of the best of the modestly priced drive imaging and backup programs available on the market, with a Vista-compatible version just released. Norton Save & Restore 2.0 is simple to use, although we preferred Drive Backup 8.5.

Norton Save & Restore 2.0 is a consumer-friendly program that uses Symantec Ghost's engine. Norton Save & Restore 2.0 is a relatively minor upgrade, save for the Vista compatibility and a redesigned step-by-step interface that is easier to use than that of its predecessor. Symantec claims that Norton Save & Restore 2.0 has been optimised for better performance, although it seemed no faster to us.

We liked the way Norton Save & Restore 2.0 will create a drive image on the less-capable PCs we often use, although the demand for at least 512MB of memory could prove an onerous requirement for older systems.

Norton Save & Restore 2.0 can create full and incremental backup images, and back up from within Windows. With Norton Save & Restore 2.0 you can also back up individual files and folders.

Norton Save & Restore 2.0 offers useful and easy-to-follow walk-throughs to help with simple backup tasks.

Norton Save & Restore 2.0 creates a boot CD that is restore only.

OUR VERDICT
