This wondrous little black box is the epitome of today’s MP3 gadgets and could easily become every commuter’s best friend. It does everything that you would expect from a £100 MP3 player and so much more.

The Teac MP-450’s unexpected features that impressed the most are its FM radio - it picked up an impressively strong signal in the depths of leafy Surrey - a radio recorder (with the touch of a button you can effortlessly record your favourite song and file it away) and an extremely easy to use voice recorder. Tetris which comes preloaded, too. The Teac MP-450 has a very agreeable animated menu system that is very easy to navigate through with slick easy decipherable icons sliding in and out of view as you scroll to your chosen function.

There’s a gorgeous 2in TFT 256K colour screen on which were were more than happy to while away a rainy lunchbreak watching The Simpsons and Futurama. Live TV and photos also display well and we were pleased to find the Teac MP-450 stayed the distance, lasting 14 hours between charges.

All these functions come beautifully packaged in a futuristic black glass and chrome surround. The only slight disappointment is the rather plastic feel of the buttons but at only 40g the Teac cMP-450 an be forgiven for the use of lightweight materials. The headphones supplied appear a little cheap for this lovingly crafted player but the sound quality is great especially as you have the ability to choose 1 of 7 preset equalizer settings or create and save your own.

Be warned, though, it disappointingly struggled to transfer files from some admittedly older PCs but actually managed to crash the Mac when connected via USB, even though it says it’s supported. I hope this can be sorted out by further firmware updates as I am definitely smitten.

OUR VERDICT

We have a few niggles over file transfer and build quality, but it doesn’t stop the Teac MP-450 going on to our shopping list.
