The widescreen format is the best way to view content - especially entertainment - and it's all the rage on TVs and flat-panels. But if you want to make the most of widescreen you've got to go large - there's no point buying a 15in tiddler.

So thank you LG for introducing the Flatron M2343A-BZ, a very stylish 23in widescreen LCD TV with a great screen and other media facilities.

The LG may seem expensive, but it's not badly priced, even though it lacks the connection options of a lot of the competition and doesn't offer dual tuner. It has a nice aesthetic. We loved the super-thin curve design and black fascia, with white around the back and on the speaker grill. The big, shiny stand can only be positioned with a tilt, so you might find it hard hitting the exact spot, but the generous viewing angle means the display is clear from most of a room.

In search of connectivity options, we opened the back panel (which neatly hides all the wires) and there are digital or analogue jacks for a PC, two scart sockets, S-Video and, most bizarrely, a serial connector. Why? Well, it's so you can hook up to a projector or printer, according to LG.

There's only one internal tuner, which means you can't watch and record at the same time - and the picture-in-picture function displays only split PC and TV screens. While the speakers lacked bass, there's enough wattage to make a loud noise and screen quality impressed. The 8ms response time ensures smooth image playback.

OUR VERDICT

In our book, widescreen LCD TVs are still too expensive for the average consumer, but prices continue to drop and the LG Flatron M2343A-BZ is cheaper than most. If your front room won't be complete until you get one, this Flatron could be a good solution.
