Xerox may be closely associated with photocopiers, but copier and laser printer technologies are very similar, so it's not a surprise to see Xerox making an impression in this market with the Xerox Phaser 6180. Visually, the Xerox Phaser 6180 is very much a corporate product, and looks and feels as if it could be much more expensive. The packaging, the supplied manual and the software similarly look as if they've been put together with some thought.

The Xerox Phaser 6180's build quality is solid. The styling isn't outstanding, but it's a step up from most of the competition, and the vertical format gives the Xerox Phaser 6180 a smaller footprint than average. There are plenty of thoughtful touches, such as a door at the rear that makes it easy to add more memory, and a clever damper on the front door.

The Xerox Phaser 6180's drivers provide a minimal selection of extra tools, but include ColorConnection - a template pack designed to work with Xerox paper - and a remote management utility called PrintingScout. The on-printer features are limited to a two-line LCD that indicates toner levels, plus a pair of LEDs to indicate running status and errors.

Running costs are middling, and offer little economic benefit to users of hi-cap toner cartridges. Speed is similarly underwhelming, with the Xerox Phaser 6180 clocking up a slow time-to-print of 1 min, 40 secs, and a colour throughput of 17ppm, compared to the 20ppm that Xerox quotes.

Print quality is also mediocre. Using the default settings, prints initially came out far too dark. Adjusting the brightness slider in the drivers fixed this, but shouldn't have been necessary. Once adjusted, the Xerox Phaser 6180's prints showed reasonable colour but revealed some Jpeg artefacts.

OUR VERDICT

Although the Xerox Phaser 6180 is the budget choice, it offers slightly better than budget-level performance - although watch out for some fairly slow print speeds.
