The Kyocera Mita FS-C5250DN is a slightly faster version of the Kyocera Mita FS-C5150DN workgroup printer we reviewed last year.

In terms of appearance, the FS-C5250DN and FS-C5150DN are very similar. The FS-C5250DN is a truly meaty workgroup printer, with a very large footprint. With a weight of 30kg, this'll need a fair amount of shifting, and its vast footprint stretches back for miles.

It wasn't just the Kyocera Mita FS-C5250DN's size that knocked us back, though - the paper handling is immense. The huge paper tray at the bottom of the printer can take a mighty 500 sheets, while a 50-sheet multipurpose feeder is also available for more specialist work.

But what's really impressive about this printer is the amount of extra paper handling you can add to it - indeed, the Kyocera Mita FS-C5250DN can take up to 2,050 sheets with the optional trays. This is a staggering amount of paper storage, and ensures that the FS-C5250DN should be kitted out for almost any job, no matter how big.

Memory is sizzling too. Like the FS-C5150DN, the Kyocera Mita FS-C5250DN comes with 256MB as standard, and this can be expanded to 1,280MB in all. An Ethernet connection is provided although, like the other printers in this category, wireless capabilities aren't offered. See Business Advisor.

The control panel is more complex than on some printers, although reasonably intuitive. The Kyocera Mita FS-C5250DN's buttons are a little hard to make out from a distance, but are clearly marked close to. The LCD display offers two lines of text, and kept us reasonably well informed.

The software provided with the Kyocera Mita FS-C5250DN is very good, with the KM Net Viewer a very comprehensive monitoring applet, and it’s easy to control the printer using the web-based software interface As you'd expect of a printer of these capabilities, it offers a good range of languages, with PCL version and Kyocera's PostScript 3 emulation covered. And you also have a USB port, making it easy to plug in a flash drive.

The Kyocera Mita FS-C5250DN hits some very good figures when it comes to speed. While it doesn't quite match the stated figures of 26ppm, it comes very close - it notched up 24.8ppm in our text tests. This is quite a turn of speed, and produced clean and reasonably sharp text. Auto duplexing drops the speed to 17.7ppm, a figure that should still prove acceptable to most users, and will allow them to preserve paper by printing to both sides as default.

Colour images were also fast, with 18.3ppm achievable. The Kyocera Mita FS-C5250DN isn't the best of printers for colour photos, and the palette wasn't quite as crisp as it might be. For standard colour images, though, the Kyocera is excellent, and our PowerPoint tests were very bold.

The Kyocera Mita FS-C5250DN's running costs are extremely low, and its mono and colour toner cartridges can generate as many as 7,000 and 5,000 sheets respectively, producing very pleasing figures of 1.2p and 5.2p respectively. The colour figure, in particular, is fantastic, and makes this an excellent printer for those who favour running costs above all else. Indeed, if you want a printer that has the potential to grow and gather power, the Kyocera has some very nice bolt-ons.

OUR VERDICT

With superb running costs and searing speed, the Kyocera Mita FS-C5250DN is quite a model. Only its slightly disappointing colour photo printing makes us stop short of giving it a huge recommendation.
