The Pentax Optio T30 doesn't forge any new ground over its predecessor the T20. In fact, we wonder whether Pentax found the 7.1Mp sensor, 2.9x optical zoom and beautiful 3in touchscreen in the T20's spare parts bin.

One of the few areas where the T30 has made obvious progress, however, is with the brave range of ISO settings that it offers. This now stretches to a staggering 3,200.

The exterior has received a minor face lift, while the rear is unchanged.

One of the main advantages of using a touchscreen is that the T30 has no need to be plastered with superfluous clutter. Each of the Pentax's menu and shooting options is accessed through a series of screen taps; these are both simple to use and context-sensitive. But we're not huge fans of touchscreens in general – you quickly end up with more fingerprints than a crime scene.

From an image quality point of view the Pentax performs satisfactorily, but certainly not stunningly. It produces reasonable exposures and saturation.

However, we did find that the automatic white balance has a tendency to wander into cooler tones. And noise levels often prove problematic: while these may have been passable when shooting at lower ISOs, higher settings result in a veritable blizzard that simply obliterates the detail in our shots, spoiling the overall effect.

OUR VERDICT

A solidly built, decent value camera, the Pentax Optio T30 suffers by comparison to similarly priced cameras such as the Panasonic DMC-FX12 and the Nikon Coolpix S10, particularly in terms of its feature set and picture quality.
