It’s not the fastest printer around, but Canon’s new MG3250 is an affordable and versatile inkjet printer for home users.

Priced at just £69, the MG3250 is a multifunction device that provides a 4800x1200dpi printer, along with a 1200x2400dpi scanner and copier. It has built-in Wi-Fi for connecting to your home network, and we were also pleased to see that Canon even includes a USB printer cable as well – which is something of a rarity these days. See Group test: what's the best multifunction printer?

It’s not particularly exciting to look at, consisting of little more than a black, plastic box. However, it’s reasonably compact, measuring about 152mm high, 450mm wide, and 304mm deep, so it won’t require too much desk space when you’re setting it up at home. Print quality is good for text and graphics, although its speed is relatively modest, coming in at about 6.5 pages per minute for black text and just 3.5ppm for colour. It also took a full minute to produce a 4”x6” glossy photo print. That makes it more of a casual, every-now-and-then printer rather than a workhorse for daily use. Even so, it should still be fine for ordinary home users and people who occasionally work from home. Take a look at the Kodak Hero 3.1 review too.

The MG3250 also has some useful extra features, such as automatic duplex printing, which you don’t often get in printers at this price. Canon’s printer software is well designed too, with a menu that pops up out of the Dock and provides quick access to network settings and various printing and scanning features.

Our main complaint is that Canon charges a rather steep £23 for its high-yield black and colour ink cartridges. However, you can save about £5 per cartridge if you shop around online and that brings running costs down to about 3p per page for text documents and just under 8p for colour. That’s not outrageous by any means, but there other inkjet printers that do offer lower running costs.

OUR VERDICT

The speed and running costs of the MG3250 mean that it’s not the best choice for frequent, everday use. However, its duplex option and helpful software will appeal to home workers or students who occasionally need to produce longer, high-quality documents.
