The Samsung R60 shows that you don't need to spend a huge amount of money to get a decent laptop.

Despite having a price tag under £400 the Samsung R60 still has a decent specification and would make a good office machine.

It may have only a 1.46GHz Intel Pentium Dual-Core T2310 chip, but this is accompanied by a full 1GB of RAM – generous given the Samsung R60's budget price.

The Samsung R60's WorldBench 6 real-world score of 54 is a little on the low side, but it still should be sufficient if it's simply to be used for word processing, web surfing and email.

The Samsung R60 is not really up to gaming, though, and its 256MB ATI Radeon Xpress 1250 graphics processor only managed to achieve 7fps (frames per second) in our gruelling games test. Battery life came in at an acceptable 107 minutes. The hard drive may be a little small at 80GB but, again, it's reasonable for the money.

It has a fabulous glossy 15.4in screen which offers superb colours and a 1,280x800 resolution. Like all glossy screens the Samsung R60's suffers from increased reflectivity. In fact, this is such a classy-looking notebook, it could easily pass itself off as a laptop costing twice as much with its shiny piano-black casing and sleek curves. The keyboard is a good size, making it easy to type on and it comes with a reasonable-sized trackpad.

While it's no hefty desktop replacement, the Samsung R60 is a little on the large side and weighs a fairly considerable 2.7kg. For our money, this discounts it from the daily commute.

The Samsung R60 is also a little sparse on ports and connectors, with just three USB ports available - although thankfully they're split with two at the rear and one on the left, providing some flexibility for plugging in peripherals.

OUR VERDICT

If your needs are modest and you have a budget to match, then the Samsung R60 is an ideal candidate. It may be a little lacking in performance, but it's still up to everyday tasks and its stylish design hides its budget roots. For the money, you can't really go wrong.
