Piano Master Free is a great app to download for your Android device. It's probably best to think of it as Guitar Hero meets the touchscreen…but with a piano. See also Top ten Android apps.

The app is very simple to use and you'll be playing a catchy tune on your smartphone/tablet with in seconds of downloading the device. The free app comes preinstalled with seven free songs to play. Most of the free songs a classical classics from the likes of Bach and Beethoven - don't worry if you don't recognise the song titles, within a few Piano Master notes, you'll probably recognise the tune - they're all used in TV and film. However, if you're a complete classical vacuum then there are a few mainstream numbers to play too; such as Happy Birthday and The Entertainer (Felix cat food adverts). See Stick Cricket for Android review.

As mentioned above, the gameplay is pretty much rip-off of Guitar Hero and its spin offs. Each key you need to press will fall down from the top of the screen and you need to press the key at the exact time it hits the bottom to get a 'perfect' score. What makes Piano Master better than Guitar Hero - in my opinion - is that it's that little bit more realistic and challenging. Instead of just having four buttons to tap, you're actually presented with over an octave of piano keys. Nailing a song on Piano master gives you that little bit more 'sense of an achievement' as you're actually playing the lead melody.

Piano Master steps things up a gear with its three different difficulty settings. If you're getting too good at rocking out all seven free songs on Beginner mode, then you have Apprentice and Expert to deal with. We failed miserably at Apprentice mode during our test and the less said about our Expert mode attempt the better. Jools Holland would even probably struggle on that setting.

The app offers a paid for version which increases the number of songs you can play. However, this costs £1.99 and you'd expect a few more songs than you get.

…And it's a simple as that. To be blunt: This app lets you play the piano as if you've been reading music all your life. What's not to like?

OUR VERDICT

It's not the most original app ever invented, nor is it the most in-depth. What it is, is a very enjoyable and easy way to play some good music to a high standard relatively quickly. Great fun and well worth a download.
