Of course, when we say cash, we're really talking pocket money. It's likely that you'll far get more for your items at a car boot or on eBay, but neither offers such a fast or guaranteed sale as does musicMagpie - and there are no fees to pay here.

For example, the highest price we were offered on the Android app was £3 for 'The Pacific' boxset, which has an RRP of £39 and is selling secondhand in our local Blockbusters for £29. musicMagpie was prepared to pay 30p or above for each of our old DVDs, with Disney titles such as 'Bambi' and 'The Rescuers' taking slightly more, at £2.10 and £1.43 respectively. Some old Xbox 360 games, Forza Motorsport 4 and Need for Speed: SHIFT, were worth 97p and £1.35 respectively. For CDs, the most we were offered was 75p for The Pixies' Wave of Mutilation.

musicMagpie requires that you must trade in at least 10 items at a time, but it pays the postage and will send out a courier if you have more than 50. In order for the service to pay out, all items must be in working condition, in their original boxes and with any accompanying literature - defaced or pirate copies are not permitted. In the event that your parcel goes missing, musicMagpie is liable for up to £20.

The musicMagpie app itself is incredibly easy to use, and you don't even need to register for an account to begin acquiring prices for the old media that's probably gathering dust on your shelves. You simply launch the app, then click the 'Get Value' button. You can use the barcode scanner to quickly find your items, or manually enter each code.

All items appear in your Basket; individual items can be removed by tapping the options menu and choosing Edit. You'll need to sign in or register - possible through the app itself - to complete the sale or save your Basket for later (items will remain here for 48 hours only unless you physically save them).

You can ask musicMagpie to send you free postage labels by post or email, and your money is then paid by cheque, e-voucher or donated to a charity of your choice. Parcels are said to take up to 10 days to arrive at musicMagpie HQ, and processing your order can take up to seven days; your cheque is then posted out within 2 days. OUR VERDICT

You won't make big money selling your old CDs, DVDs and games through musicMagpie and, with a complete turnaround time of up to 19 days, neither will you make fast cash. For the odd item, you stand to make more money at a car boot or on eBay - but if you have a huge collection of media gathering dust, musicMagpie offers a quick and simple way to get rid. The app itself is well-designed and straightforward to use.
