Being an Englishman who has watched a total of 23 minutes of baseball in my whole life, Homerun Battle 2 was a bit of a journey off the beaten track. Although with that said, I feel I should point out it wasn't a completely horrifying experience. See also: Best Android Apps

It's probably best to think of Homerun Battle 2 as everything you've ever imaged about american sports and Japanese arcade games rolled up (or in this case, Korena arcade games) into one megabyte-hungry app. Everything about the tacky app suggests it's going to be terrible and cringe-y, but then all of a sudden you find yourself swinging like a madman at 75mph balls, and then without realising it you're hooked. See Stick Cricket for Android review.

The gameplay of this app is great. Everything is smooth and once you've started a game everything happens so quickly you dare not take your eyes of your Android's screen, for fear of missing a ball and therefor precious points. Points which I'll be completely honest, I still don't fully grasp how are awarded, but I do know the better you hit it, the more points you get. See also Top ten Android apps.

During the game you control your hitter - or in the Queen's 'batsman' - using your handset's built in accelerometer. You have to tilt your device up, down, left and right to make sure your swing is in the middle of the hitting box (I'm almost positive that's not the technical name for it). Once you're happy with your aim you wait for the ball to come and then tap the screen when you think you're the ball is in the best place to be thwacked. It's as easy as that, but be warned, the balls come thick and fast…and, er, it's not "as easy as that".

Once you've got the basics - which are taught to you in a well designed and idiot-proof tutorial - you can try your hand at one of the six different game modes on offer. These are Duel, Survival, Mission, Burning, Arcade and Training. The game modes are all essentially the same thing, and that "same thing" is you have to hit the ball as well as you can each time. However they do add a certain amount of spice to the app and if you're a fan of flames, you'll love burning mode, as in typical American style, flames are introduced to the game the better you hit the baseball.

The app really earns its keep with it's in online mode. Here you can play against friends and strangers alike in duel mode. I lost badly on this, but can see how baseball lovers would buy into testing their hitting skills against thier mates. It really is a great feature that we will hopefully see more of in future apps. The app offers added depth with the ability to customise your character anyway you want and also offers several different difficulty levels to keep you on your toes.

Homerun Battle 2 really is a well developed app with some great gameplay on offer. My only gripe with it is on a personal level and that is more to do with my lack of love for baseball as a sport. That said it is a must download for baseball lovers, and high standard set for future free sports apps.
