Toshiba’s LX830-12W sits at the top end of our “inexpensive” all-in-ones with a PC featuring a good balance of performance and features suitable for a family or student PC.

See: more reviews of all-in-one PCs.

It features a 23in full-HD IPS touchscreen display with a simple picture-frame style stand at the rear. This stand also features a handy HDMI input and a row of four USB 2.0 connectors, which are supplemented by a pair of USB 3.0 ports and a card reader on the left edge of the display.

Uniquely among recently tested AIO PCs, the Toshiba LX830-12W comes with a built-in Freeview TV tuner and a remote control for Windows Media Center, providing all manner of home entertainment from a single screen in your room.

Unfortunately, the price doesn’t include a copy of Windows Media Center, since Microsoft removed this from Windows 8. You’ll need to buy this separately if you want it, currently costing another £100 for Microsoft's upgrade price.

Toshiba’s huge bundle of pre-installed applications includes ArcSoft TV 5.0 instead. The system comes with a DVD burner, but lacks the Blu-ray drive provided on some Windows PCs. The HDMI port will allow you to plug in your own Blu-ray player or a games console.

The 2.5GHz Intel Core i3-2110M is just a tiny bit faster than the chip used in the Acer 5600U system, but overall performance seems much better – helped no doubt by the 8GB of memory.

The Toshiba LX830-12W offers no discrete graphics chip, but the CPU includes Intel HD Graphics 4000, which is somewhat faster than the Intel HD Graphics 2500 offered by Chillblast.

If you’re not so worried about Windows games, the graphics performance will be quite adequate although it certainly doesn’t feel as slick as more expensive systems such as the 21.5in Apple iMac.

Several versions of the PC are available, starting as low as £599 with a basic Pentium processor, but we’d recommend sticking to this model or even something faster with an Intel Core i5 – our review sample felt barely capable of a smooth experience.

OUR VERDICT

The Toshiba LX830-12W offers a built-in TV tuner, HDMI input and decent Onkyo stereo speakers, making it a useful multimedia hub at a reasonable starting price. The lack of a discrete graphics processor means it struggles with gaming and it doesn’t come with Windows Media Center, despite the inclusion of a Media Center remote control. It would benefit from a processor upgrade to run touchscreen Windows 8 better.
