We ran this same poll last year, so it's about time we ran it again to see how things have moved on, and who is winning in the battle of the browsers.

Let us know what web browser you use the most in our poll.

Poll: Which web browser do you use most often?

I've been using Chrome since it was a Beta - the first time I used it I just loved the uncluttered layout. At that time I seemed to spend all my time trying to get rid of menus and buttons so that there was less wasted space on my screen. As I now do most of my work and browsing on a 13" laptop wasted screenspace still annoys me. I also love that my favourites are automatically transferred from one PC to another (maybe other browsers do that but I never found it?)

Chrome seemed to go through a period where some websites wouldn't work with it (watching videos was a problem for a while). I tried Firefox but despite friends raving about it I just found it cluttered and messy. I also tried Safari and (like iTunes) hated it almost instantly for no apparent logical reason. So I still have IE9 on my laptop for the odd occasion I need it and also use IE8 at work.

ams4127 I have just noticed your comment about Opera and the iPad. Tried it and agree with you, it beats Safari hands down. Thanks.

" There's a reason why the big browsers are so popular - they're the best available"

Maybe. And maybe microsoft bundling internet explorer with every version of windows sold has had some impact on the figures as well.

Iceweasel - a Firefox derivative, but only because of the development tools available. Otherwise I use and like Opera and Chrome.

With Maxthon you have to have at least IE6 installed according to the system requirements, this suggests to me that it's nothing more than an IE skin, Internet Explorer is doing all the work underneath, so it isn't really a standalone browser, no IE then no Maxthon.

Maxthon isn't a bad browser by any means - it's actually based on the Internet Explorer engine, so may feel familiar to many people.

Unfortunately it isn't particularly fast, although lots of users seem to think otherwise. I ran some controlled speed tests, and it was beaten hands down by Google Chrome. It was also slower than Internet Explorer and Firefox. It has a big following in Mainland China, and it's slowly gaining a userbase in the West, although it has a very long way to go.

There's a reason why the big browsers are so popular - they're the best available.

Not heard of that browser before. Downloaded and trying it out. Like Pine Man it is very fast and easy to use.

Don't know if it's my imagination but it seems to be the fastest of the lot at the moment. Only one minor problem is that it doesn't recognise Trusteer Rapport - but who cares anyway.

I posted my vote for Firefox before you posted your preferences and mentioned Maxthon. I'd never heard of it before but having tried it I'm inclined to leave it as my default for a while and see how I get on. Thanks!!

Fire-fox 12, is my first choice.

IE9, second choice, just wish there was an option to remove Black bar.

Google Chrome, looking into it and use it occasionally. I find its best suited for You-tube.

Firefox for me.

I am surprised that Chrome has become the most popular browser and also how much ground that Internet Explorer has lost !

Chrome, all of the time! It is by far and away the best and most secure browser out there! (in my opinion, of course!)

Firefox for main browser, Chrome for PCA website and IE as a stand-by, but hardly used. First two give much less problems?.

I tend to use Firefox for most things but still use IE9 for my banking. I did download Chrome some months ago and it sits on my bottom tray but I have not yet used it. No particular reasons for what I do as it is probably just what I'm used to doing.

During the recent fuss about Chrome data collection policies I switched to SRWare Iron which is a (German) Chrome clone. It looks and feels exactly the same as Chrome but supposedly without the intrusion (or maybe with it switched OFF by default?). I've no idea if that side of it works or not but the browser is fine so i'll just stick with it.

When I made this comment earlier, a few years ago, I seem to recall that you agreed with me, and blamed machinations at AOL, not the on-line world, for its demise!

Netscape Navigator

Netscape Navigator was a good browser, I'd just started using it when they shut up shop as they could no longer afford to compete with Microsoft.

Towards the end they handed the code over to the Mozilla foundation to carry on development, so Firefox is possibly how Netscape Navigator would have ended up.

One side effect of Netscape's demise is that Microsoft decided they'd won the browser war, and pretty much stopped development of Internet Explorer.

I too used to like netscape, but then went almost unwillingly onto IE. Stayed with it until about 3 months ago when my impatience at the resource hogging bloatware that IE evolved into finally overcame my natural inertia (aka laziness) and I made the switch to chrome.

I feel like I've got my machines back again, it's such an improvement. I think MS are going to have to seriously raise their game if I am ever going to move back.

On Win 7 Laptop, IE9. On iMAC OSX Lion 10.7.4, Safari 5.1.7. Much prefer IE9, but do not think there is a MAC version. Will have to chase around and see.

I use IE8 only because our SAP system at work doesn't work properly in Chrome.
